The Importance of Self-Love

Love Yourself - The Importance of Self-Love

All of us are aware of the importance of having love in our lives. However, most of us look at love as an external force, something that others give to us in return for our affection, fidelity, etc. This externalized view of love can cause problems, especially in situations where we aren’t receiving love back from the outside world. In these cases, we can end up angry, disappointed and bitter because we aren’t getting the love we need and feel that we deserve.

This is why self-love is so important. When you internalize your source of love, you guarantee that your inner fire is always fueled. You no longer have to look outside of yourself to get the affection and support that you need. Instead, you become the primary source of of the care and attention that you need to grow and thrive.

Loving yourself is not a selfish act and it doesn’t mean that you cut yourself off from the outside world. Far from it. When you truly love yourself and care for yourself, you begin to develop a love for the life you lead and, through that, a love for the world.

You no longer depend on others for affirmation. Instead you self-affirm on a daily basis. You lose the cloud of disappointment and anger that comes from depending on an externalized source of love. As a result, you are better able to see the everyday miracles that surround you, and take advantage of the possibility and potential that comes from living a limitless life.

Here are the four best ways to begin to develop a self-love practice in your own life:

  1. Be Grateful – Focus on the positive aspects in your life. When you take an inventory of the good things you have and the positive things that surround you, you begin to jettison the baggage that hold you back from truly embracing who you really are.
  2. Eliminate Negative Self-Talk – We all have that voice in our heads that constantly monologues to us throughout the day. Pay attention to what that voice is saying and edit out the negative self-talk by turning to around into positive support. Instead of ‘I can’t”, say “I can”. Instead of “I won’t”, say “I will”.
  3. Care For Your Body – Very often self-love or self-loathing manifests itself in how you take care of your body. Begin a self-love practice by paying attention to how you treat the only body you have. Giving yourself the gift of proper nutrition, exercise and rest is the best way to begin loving the person you are.
  4. Practice Forgiveness – We all have done things that we regret. Unfortunately, many of us punish ourselves far more severely for a lapse of judgment than anyone else ever could. Begin to show yourself compassion for the mistakes that you’ve made. When you forgive yourself, you begin to love yourself, and through that love, are able to show the same compassion to others.
