How to Start Living Now

In our daily lives, rushing, hurrying, and worrying seem to be the name of the game. Our attention spans are short and our patience shorter. All of these things only serve one purpose: to distract us from what’s really important – the present moment.

Life is shorter than you think. There are no guarantees. Your existence is founded on chance. While these can be unsettling thoughts, they can also be important reminders to not waste a single moment of the time that we are given.

The sooner you learn to live in the present moment, the sooner the rushing, hurrying, and worrying dissipate, leaving you able to breathe deeply, love fully, and engage in the world around you from a place of wonder and enthusiasm.

Now is all you have. That means that now is the best time to live intentionally, unapologetically, and with great gusto.

Here are three easy ways to begin living in the present moment:

  • Become Aware – The simple act of taking a walk can become a lesson in living in the moment. Look up at the sky, listen to the birds, smell the scent of the air, and feel the sun on your cheeks. Heightening your senses teaches you to live mindfully.
  • Slow Down – This goes hand in hand with awareness. As you begin to notice the world around you, slow down so that you can savor it fully. Stop and take two deep breaths every time you transition – for example, leaving a room, getting in your car or arriving for an appointment. That pause will slow you down and remind you to focus on what’s happening to you right now.
  • Practice Gratitude – Becoming fully aware brings a deep sense of thankfulness to the fore. Journal about those things you feel gratitude for, or take a few quiet moments in the morning and evening to acknowledge your gratitude. Remember that the things that your grateful for occurred in the present and are the gifts of living fully in the moment.
